The Rise of a Prairie Statesman: The Life and Times of George McGovern (Politics and Society in Twentieth-Century America) - Thomas J. Knock

I'm really enjoying this book. Thomas Knock shows George McGovern to be an incredibly gifted and fundamentally decent person who underwent a considerable journey at an early age -- a childhood in Depression-era South Dakota, in college with war looming (which offers some interesting parallels with the students of a later generation addressing war in Vietnam), then service as a bomber pilot followed by a flirtation with the ministry and then graduate school. And all before the age of 30!
