The Paraguayan War, Volume 1: Causes and Early Conduct - Thomas L. Whigham

Whigham's chapter on the battle of the Riachuelo highlights nicely both the challenges he faced in writing this book and its value as a history of the war. The battle was an important one, yet the fragmentary accounts of it force Whigham to engage in more interpretation than would be necessary for someone writing of a similar battle in the American Civil War. The result can't be taken as definitive, but he makes it clear what the sources support and where he is engaging in informed conjecture. It really serves as an excellent example of the historian's craft.
