EuroTragedy A Drama in Nine Acts - Ashoka Mody

What's emerging from Mody's book is a picture of now nationalism sabotaged the euro project. France advocated the euro as a way of shoring up their declining influence and economic standing, and Germany insisted on a monetary union without a concomitant fiscal structure because Germans did not want to finance the wealth transfer necessary to make the single currency work. It's a pretty dispiriting story all around.
